THE Boon Phawet fair is a merit-making ceremony that reflects the Buddhist belief in reincarnation. The highlights of the fair include the Khao Phan Kon Processions featuring the 13 episodes depicted in the Buddhist text Mahachat Jataka, spectacular light and sound presentations of the story of Prince Vessandara, feasts of local fare particularly delicious Khanom Jeen Nam Ya, rice vermicelli noodles served with a variety of sauces or Nam Ya, and other local delicacies.

 
 
» Asian Barred Ground Dove Cooing Competition

THAIS have long believed that doves are creatures that bring good luck to those who rear them. They are also regarded as symbols of purity and peace. Given this belief, in former times, the rearing of zebra doves was a popular past-time among Thais.
A local dove-cooing contest has now evolved into an international event with participants from the neighboring countries. The Asian Barred Ground Dove festival attracts dove-lovers from all over Thailand as well as from the neighboring countries of Thailand, particularly from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei, to the southern city of Yala. The major highlight is a dove-cooing competition involving more than 1,400 participants. Young prize doves and other local products are available on sale. Various sports contests are also held.

KITE-flying has been a popular Thai sport for centuries. In the summer months of March, April and May, a southerly wind sweeps across the open fields heralding the kite-flying season, Thai kites are classified as being “flat” or 3-dimensional. The more elaborate kites such as those taking on the more complex forms of birds or humans are usually 3-dimensional. At the annual Thailand International Kites Festivals, the unique identity of Thai kites is showcased.
Ordinary Thai kites come in all shapes and sizes with the popular ones featuring owls, fishes, various faces and serpents and ranging from inches up to 25 feet in size. These kites are usually flown for fun.
